Favourite Winnipeg Bike Routes
Biking is one of my absolute favourite summer activities. It’s such a great way to get physical activity, and is so much faster than walking or even jogging. I’ve found I’m able to see so much more of the city by biking to different areas in Winnipeg.
A lot of people think to get good biking trails you have to get outside the city to a provincial park, but there are a lot excellent routes to bike right here in Winnipeg as well!
Here are some of my favourites:
Wellington Crescent - Assiniboine Park - Wolseley
In the summertime, vehicle traffic is restricted on Wellington, making it very bike friendly. I typically come from the downtown area to Wellington, bike through Assiniboine Park, then cross the bridge over to the Wolseley side. One of my favourite parts about this route is the variety. It’s a combination of streets and bike paths, and you can even bike around the outskirts of the zoo and check out some of the animals. Plus, once you cross over the walking bridge, you can sneak over to Sargeant Sundae for an ice cream treat! ;)

Egerton - Archibald or Egerton - Fermor
Egerton is another street blocked off from vehicle traffic in the summer, which makes for an easier time biking. Although Egerton itself isn’t a super long stretch like Wellington is, it’s a great starting point for then branching off to the biking path on Archibald or Fermor, after passing by the Windsor Park Golf Course (which I also recommend checking out if you’re into golfing, by the way).

Transitway
I can’t recommend the Transitway path enough! It’s meant for bikes, it’s relatively new so in very good shape, and you can do a LOT of continuous riding without stopping. The main transitway path can lead you into the University of Manitoba or you can branch off at Bishop Grandin where there are additional trails. The only thing to be cautious of with taking the Transitway path is making sure it’s not too windy of a day! It’s pretty wide open so it can be a bit of a challenge with the wind against you.

Gateway Road (Northeast Pioneers Greenway)
The greenway along Gateway Road, called the Northeast Pioneers Greenway, is another one of my favourites. I love this trail because it’s a nice long stretch, past the North Perimeter quite a ways. For the most part there are minimal stops other than a few sets of traffic lights along the way, but if you go early in the morning, the path is not busy and you’ll barely need to stop at all.

Churchill Drive
Churchill Drive is another fun stretch since vehicle traffic is also restricted for the summer months. You can choose to take the white rock path that goes closer to the river, or just stay on the road and bike there - both are great options! The Churchill Drive path connects with another white rock path that takes you all the way to the Forks downtown! It’s a much simpler way to get to downtown than having to ride along Osborne.

Other routes to quickly mention but that didn’t make the “top list” would be: St. Vital Park, typically coming in from Dunkirk to St. Vital Road to River Road and then into the park, as well as Crescent Park, which I often tack onto the Transitway route after looping around the University.
I’m sure I could go on and on about bike routes all day, but I’ll leave it here for now! I hope this list helps you plan your next ride in the city!
